One of the main objectives of the Juno mission is to unveil the interior structure of Jupiter estimating its gravity field from Juno orbit determination. Applying the dual-frequency plasma calibration scheme to Juno Doppler data an additional dispersive effect on the link was discovered, not previously known or modeled. By using real Juno data collected during a dedicated test tracking pass a significative additional delay in the Ka-band at DSS 25 was estimated. The estimated value is in good agreement with the results obtained by JPL by means of an instrumental test performed at the same ground station.

Abstract

One of the main objectives of the Juno mission is to unveil the interior structure of Jupiter estimating its gravity field from Juno orbit determination. Applying the dual-frequency plasma calibration scheme to Juno Doppler data an additional dispersive effect on the link was discovered, not previously known or modeled. By using real Juno data collected during a dedicated test tracking pass a significative additional delay in the Ka-band at DSS 25 was estimated. The estimated value is in good agreement with the results obtained by JPL by means of an instrumental test performed at the same ground station.
