The results of a long-term research program carried out by the University of Bologna in collaboration with Agip Petroli SpA in the start and later with APAT are presented. In this work a census of Italian mining sites, currently the only one existing nation-wide, has been undertaken. Said census has identified about three thousand sites, active in the period 1870 – 2006, and has led to implement a mine database. The main target was initially to characterize abandoned mines in order to define their potentiality for rehabilitation projects. Afterwards, the database has supplied data to classify the level of geomechanical instability of abandoned underground mines, based on a new risk index (RI). The paper describes also the problems met in acquiring elements of knowledge, which have influenced the database structure, and the criteria established to determine the parameters to be considered in RI definition.

Abstract
