After the publication of Charles Taylor’s essay Politics of Recognition (1992), there has been a revival of the topic of recognition within the international political philosophy debates. Influential authors – notably Honneth and Fraser – have investigated the concept of recognition, proposing it as the foundation of a new conception of politics. Looking for the philosophical roots of the theory of recognition as the basis of the social relationship, the essay explores Alexandre Kojève’s original reading of Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit, with a particular focus on the desire of recognition as it emerges in the struggle between master and slave.
