Echoes of Seneca’s Tragedies in Petrarch’s Seniles · The essay aims to examine the reception of Lucius Annaeus Seneca’s Tragoediae in Petrarch’s Seniles, in the Posteritati and in other works. The analysis of the comments written by the poet alongside some passages from the Tragoediae on the Manuscript Escorialensis T III 11 is the starting point of a discussion of Petrarch’s reinterpretation of the words of the Latin author, which are evoked in explicit form or, in some cases, in a more allusive way within some famous intimate, philosophical, religious and historical-political reflections. In addition to dealing with consolidated topoi such as the fuga temporis and the imminence of senectus, Petrarch chose the Tragoediae as a term of comparison to discuss the value of a belated mutatio vitae, the advantages of temperance, the desire for glory, the fluctuatio of the soul and the desire forsomnus and quiet. More broadly, the Tragoediae also reappear as a support for Petrarch’s political reflections on the instability of popular favour, even serving as an exemplary model for the description of contemporary political circles, whose decadence inspires, to the mind of the poet, apocalyptic visions akin to the gloomy scenarios of the Senecan stage.
