The turbulent entrainment through the interface between a laminar and a turbulent region of a flow is one of the most ubiquitous phenomena in nature and technology where most flows are characterized by the compresence of rotational turbulent areas and laminar irrotational ones. Recently this phenomenon have been studied in the a controlled laboratory experiment where the diffusion of turbulence produced by an oscillating grid has been investigated. The resulting flow is quite instructive since the observed behaviour in this this flow without mean shear is believed to come from the interplay of the dynamics of both the large and the small scales of turbulence.

Abstract

The turbulent entrainment through the interface between a laminar and a turbulent region of a flow is one of the most ubiquitous phenomena in nature and technology where most flows are characterized by the compresence of rotational turbulent areas and laminar irrotational ones. Recently this phenomenon have been studied in the a controlled laboratory experiment where the diffusion of turbulence produced by an oscillating grid has been investigated. The resulting flow is quite instructive since the observed behaviour in this this flow without mean shear is believed to come from the interplay of the dynamics of both the large and the small scales of turbulence.
