The construction sector is responsible, in Italy as well as in many other countries, for a significant environmental impact. If the energy consumption in the building use phase is quickly decreasing thanks to several recent regulations and laws, the energy spent during the whole building life-cycle is seldom considered in current design process. In this paper, the global energy balance in the building process is formulated and the relevant parameters identified, taking into account the energy consumption not only in the building site, but also faraway in the whole life-cycle. This topic is discussed from the point of view of the designers, examining how the energy balance might orient the designers themselves towards more sustainable architectural solutions, technologies and materials.
