Technology and lack of co-presence do not seem to make things easy for remote interpreters, in particular for telephone interpreters. The cognitive complexity of this practice makes it also rather challenging to try to tease apart the way the different factors involved interact. However, remote interpreting in different settings and genres is a well-established professional practice, employing thousands of interpreters across the world. From the traditional health care encounters, telephone-based interpreting (TI) assignments broach a myriad of public services - emergencies, domestic violence, the police -, as well as business services -insurance companies and tourism. This multilingual volume focuses on telephone interpreting (TI). It provides a thorough description of the theoretical and methodological underpinnings of this technologized remote interpreter-mediated interaction. The most common mechanisms of remote, dialogic interpreter-mediated institutional interaction are also described, together with original TI corpus-based evidence of the challenges and opportunities posed by technologized, remote, dialogic interpreting versus face-to-face dialogue interpreting in 3 language combinations (Spanish, Italian and English), namely the languages involved in the Erasmus+ "SHIFT in Orality- Shaping the Interpreters of the Future and of Today" Project, coordinated by our Department.
