This paper discusses an Online Collaborative Learning (OCL) educational experience occured in a university context focusing on Role Taking (RT), a scaffolding tool for an effective collaborative learning. The research question aims to explore the possible existence of differences in the students' perception in terms of group cohesion, effectiveness of the organization and work's management, efficacy of the online role play activity, and, more generally, the satisfaction on the proposed experience, concerning two specific variables: the role assignment by the teacher and the choice of the role made by the group. The results match with those of the main studies on the subject: RT, regardless the differences observed in the two main groups, is functional to support the processes of collaborative construction knowledge and socialization among group members, encouraging the assumption of duties and responsibilities, activating different forms of meta-reflection, stimulating the same to question themselves and often behave in an unusual way.
