The paper develops a reflection on the teaching of writing based on a module on essay writing given in the Master’s degree in “Specialized translation”: the module required students to practice different kinds of creative nonfiction writing. This kind of writing allows the students to consider their writing process as a whole instead of focusing solely on the final product, namely the textual genre and its rules, as often happens. The nonfiction writing forces students to take responsibility for the text and its meaning. For these reasons, it would be more useful to introduce increased attention to textual genres after this training in nonfiction writing.

Abstract

The paper develops a reflection on the teaching of writing based on a module on essay writing given in the Master’s degree in “Specialized translation”: the module required students to practice different kinds of creative nonfiction writing. This kind of writing allows the students to consider their writing process as a whole instead of focusing solely on the final product, namely the textual genre and its rules, as often happens. The nonfiction writing forces students to take responsibility for the text and its meaning. For these reasons, it would be more useful to introduce increased attention to textual genres after this training in nonfiction writing.
