The approval of the eighteenth amendment of the US Constitution, which introduced Prohibition, severely hit the Italian-American wine industry in California. The difficulties generated by the new legislation produced an overall weakening of the industry, with the closure of many wineries. Some winemakers applied survival strategies, suspended between legality and illegality, exploiting the loopholes of the law and trying to find new economic opportunities. The last years before the Repeal of the eighteenth amendment, marked by the Great Depression, were characterized by the efforts of cooperation between viticulturists, a new ability to relate to public authorities and, when at the beginning of the 1930s Prohibition was clearly at its end, by a growing optimism. The new generations of Italian-American winemakers, in the 1930s, became the big players of the industry, also thanks to the experience gained during Prohibition.

L’approvazione del diciottesimo emendamento della Costituzione statunitense, che introduceva il proibizionismo, colpì duramente l’industria vinicola italoamericana della California. Le difficoltà generate dalla nuova legislazione produssero un indebolimento complessivo dell’industria, con la chiusura di moltissime aziende. Alcuni viticoltori riuscirono ad applicare strategie di sopravvivenza, sospese tra legalità e illegalità, sfruttando le lacune della legge e cercando di trovare nuove opportunità economiche. Gli ultimi anni prima dell’abrogazione del diciottesimo emendamento, segnati dalla grande depressione, si contraddistinsero per gli sforzi di cooperazione tra i viticoltori, una nuova capacità di rapportarsi ai poteri pubblici e, quando al principio degli anni trenta la strada del proibizionismo sembrò segnata, per un crescente ottimismo. Le nuove generazioni di viticoltori italoamericani, negli anni Trenta, divennero protagonisti dell’industria, anche grazie all’esperienza maturata durante il proibizionismo.
