The present work investigates the university-company interaction in Brazil using as a proxy the research groups registered with CNPq that declared some relationship with the company. The information was extracted from the CNPq Research Groups Directory for the 2002 and 2004 Censuses. The exercise allows us to infer a recent panorama of the interaction between universities and companies in the country. The results reveal that in 2002 the relationships reflected an unsophisticated demand for academic inputs, aimed at small improvements or adaptations, in 2004, in turn, a greater narrowing of relations with companies is observed, reflecting in the preponderance of frequency relationships such as the results of scientific research and technology transfer. If, on the one hand, this investigation illustrates recent specificities of the National Innovation System present in the country, on the other hand it points out that there is still space for incentives that encourage the transfer of academic knowledge to companies.
