This section is part of a workbook which is offered as a resource and pedagogic tool for the acquisition of a metalinguistic competence of the English language in first-level degree courses at an intermediate level. It is meant to provide teachers and L2 learners with a set of “Review Exercises” to put into practice the metalinguistic contents of the courses they teach and attend. It is centred on the role of language as a social semiotic system as proposed by a Systemic Functional approach to grammar. Students are asked to apply the principles of the theoretical Functional Grammar (FG) model to text analysis through a wide range of items, mainly of a multiple choice kind, but also brief open-ended. Tasks and exercises are based on authentic texts, such as newspaper articles, headlines and letters to the Editor, taken from sources like International Herald Tribune or The Guardian and dealing with current affairs. Most of them are mono-thematic, focusing on particular aspects of FG, even though a few cover a variety of topics. Keys are supplied at the end of the appendix, in order to be used by students also for self-study. The issues which are tested include Embedding; Modality: Orientation and Value; the Transitivity system: Processes and participants, relational Processes, Verbal Group Complexes and causative Processes; Projection; Grammatical Metaphor: Interpersonal and Ideational; the APPRAISAL SYSTEMS; Thematic Structure and Cohesion.
