This book has the aim of framing the conservation system of historic cities in Italy and Japan and its application over time, by the means of comparison between significant case studies represented by the cities of Bologna and Kanazawa. Bologna and Kanazawa are very similar both for size, geographical and socio-economic conditions. During the Sixties and the Seventies they have played an important role in their respective countries as "lighthouse cities" in the field of protection of historic urban centres, and today they are both Unesco Creative Cities. Starting from these two important case studiesteh research develops a comparative analysis between Italy and Japan, putting in light the contemporary issues of protection and valorization facing natural disasters from one side, and deep changes in local economic systems from the other.
