This paper analyzes the factors leading incumbent firms to survive in presence of incomplete technological substitution, a regime characterized by the coexistence of established and new technologies. Empirically, we study the evolution of the Swiss watch industry that in the late Seventies experienced a shakeout caused by the emergence of the quartz technology. To assess the impact of incumbents’ technological competencies and market positioning on firm survival we adopt survival analysis.
