Recent advances in the electronics for wireless communications is enabling transceivers to transmit and receive signals at the same time. Thus, the so called full duplex (FD) radios will soon be introduced in devices as opposed to traditional half duplex (HD). However, although FD radios allow to almost double the capacity of a single link, the advantage obtained in a network is still debated and first studies reveal that obtaining a real improvement is not so obvious due to the increased interference. With this in mind and focusing on vehicular networks exploiting IEEE 802.11p, in this paper we propose a modification to the standard protocol (compatible with the legacy devices) to let the FD receiver to send an immediate feedback in order to reduce the time wasted in collisions. The performance of the proposed protocol is firstly investigated in a simplified scenario both through simulations and analysis, and then studied in a realistic urban scenario with hundreds of nodes and the example application of crowd vehicular sensing networks. Results show an increase of the data rate up to 30%.
