Abstract

Since the end of the Second World War, the consociational model has been introduced in many European and non-European countries. After a political and legal analysis of the features of consociational democracies, the article will examine the concrete application of this model in three constitutional orders: Bosnia-Herzegovina, Northern Ireland, and North Macedonia. The objective is to underline the similarities and fundamental differences in the application of power-sharing mechanisms in the three countries, and to highlight the inherent contradictions of consociationalism, with specific reference to human rights protection.
