This paper offers the critical edition of two Greek inscriptions from Karkemish dated to the imperial age. The first, unpublished, was recently found by the Turco-Italian Archaeological Expedition (n° 1); the second, now lost, is attested by an unpublished image from the British Museum, Middle East Department Archive (n° 2; cf. IGLSyr. I, 136). The text of the two public inscriptions, heavily damaged, bears institutional details: reference is made to two ἐπιστάται, ‘superintendents’ elected in a particular circumstance for a specific task (construction of a monument, erection of the inscription itself or some other public work); and to a πρόεδρος, a member of the civic βουλή who, in the cities of Roman Arabia and Syria usually assumes the duty of ‘president’ of council and assembly. An Appendix features the new edition of IGLSyr. I, 137, a Latin epitaph from Karkemish for a praefectus alae Commagenorum of the imperial age.
L’articolo presenta l’edizione critica di due iscrizioni greche – una inedita, recentemente scoperta dalla missione turco-italiana (nr. 1); l’altra, perduta, testimoniata da una inedita foto dell’archivio del British Museum, Middle East Department (nr. 2; cf. IGLSyr. I, 136) – provenienti dal sito di Karkemish e databili all’età imperiale. Si tratta di due epigrafi pubbliche fortemente danneggiate che conservano traccia di due dettagli istituzionali: la menzione di due ἐπιστάται, ‘soprastanti’ nominati per elezione in una circostanza particolare e con uno scopo specifico (la cura dell’erezione di un monumento o dell’iscrizione stessa o di qualche altra opera di pubblica utilità); e il riferimento ad un πρόεδρος, un membro della βουλή cittadina che nelle città dell’area arabo-siriaca svolge abitualmente in età imperiale le funzioni di ‘presidente’ del consiglio e dell’assemblea. In Appendice è presentata la nuova edizione di IGLSyr. I, 137, una iscrizione sepolcrale latina di età imperiale da Karkemish per un praefectus alae Commagenorum.
