The present study describes an experimental plant fitted with a supersonic separation device that is able to perform the separation of a two phase gas - vapor flow. The experimental plant operates in accordance with an innovative process scheme based on the combination of thermodynamics and fluid dynamics effects of the following transformations: - an adiabatic expansion of the two phase gas-vapour flow; - a rapid nucleation and condensation of the vapour phase; - a separation of the liquid phase through a separation device; The expansion of the two phase flow is accomplished through a converging-diverging nozzle (De Laval nozzle) placed at the entrance of the plant. The wet gas is adiabatically expanded inside the device and it is accelerated until a supersonic speed; this transformation creates a rapid pressure and temperature drop of the flowing gas and produces a rapid vapour nucleation and a subsequent condensation of thin droplets. The multiphase flow is then conveyed inside a droplet separator which removes the liquid droplets previously condensed. After the description of the experimental plant a bibliographic analysis of the state of the art of gas – vapour flows separation devices is reported, stressing all the physical processes which take place during the normal of the supersonic separator operation and the kinetics of the nucleation and condensation mechanisms of the water droplets. The bibliographic review provides the theoretic starting point for the experimental tests that will be performed at the two phase flows Laboratory of Dipartimento di Energetica. The experimental campaign will investigate several relevant geometric and physical parameters of the separation system to highlight the response of the system both in terms of different inlet operating conditions and outlet streams required characteristics (gas and liquid flow rate, specific humidity, pressure and temperature) so that to optimize the separation process from a thermodynamic and geometric point of view.
