The article presents some of the main results of the FAMT&L International Project on formative assessment in mathematics. The main objective of the project was to promote the use of formative assessment as a possibility to improve assessment practices of secondary school mathematics teachers and student learning outcomes. This objective has been pursued through a research design that has involved an initial phase of analysis of teachers' needs. Through a triangulation of the information collected in the surveys, assessment beliefs and declarations of teachers were analyzed together with those of their students, in order to identify the implicit teachers’ training needs. In addition to the questionnaire surveys, an analysis of teachers' practices was carried out using video analysis procedures.
