This semi-thematic issue of Revista Crítica de Ciências Sociais (RCCS) is the second output of the international conference “International Solidarities and the struggle for independence in the Portuguese colonies”, held in Lisbon, at the Instituto de História Contemporânea da Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, between June 30 and July 1, 2016. The event was organized by Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, ISCTE-Instituto Universitário de Lisboa, Université Paris-Sorbonne (Paris-IV), Università di Bologna and Universidade de Coimbra & Universitatea de Vest din Timișoara, with the funding of Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnlogia. This RCCS’s semi-thematic issue brings forward three comprehensive articles on Yugoslavia and both East and West Germany’s take on solidarity, public opinion and colonialism in the former Portuguese African colonies of Angola, Mozambique and Guinea-Bissau. The articles employ mostly a historical-cultural approach that sets the ground for a larger debate on how the image of Portuguese colonialism and the struggle for independence in Angola and Mozambique, more specifically, were constructed in film and in the public opinion, through either solidarity movements or actions meant to support the liberation movements in these countries.
