Adhesion at 360° - bond for less invasive dentistry

Dear Readers, the importance of laboratory and clinical researches to preserve and maintain sound dental substrates is well-known. In this scenario, enamel-dentin adhesion plays a fundamental role allowing the principle of minimal invasive dentistry, not only in conservative, but also in restorative and prosthodontic fields. Minimal intervention depends on the possibility of a durable and reliable therapeutic option to restore the damaged dental tissue exploiting all the remaining sound substrate and bond different restorative materials to the tooth avoiding overextension of the preparation. The evolution and revolution of adhesion developed together with the concept of a less invasive dentistry have moved dental practice from the concept of “extension for prevention” to the more conservative approach of “prevention of extension”. Adhesive dentistry opened the doors to a large variety of studies and works aiming to evaluate the possibility to bond not only resin composite and glass ceramics but also polycrystalline ceramics in order to reduce the necessity of a retentive preparation. When an invasive restoration is proposed to a very young patient, does this restoration will last forever? For sure not, and what will be the following treatment option if the first rehabilitation has already been too destructive? The best and the most successful functional unit is always the patient tooth. Considering the importance of the topic for the daily clinical practice, next year, during the international joint meeting of the Italian Academy of Conservative and Restorative Dentistry (AIC) and the International Academy of Adhesive Dentistry (IAAD) to be held in Bologna from May 9th to 11th, international experts will discuss the topic of full mouth rehabilitation of worn dentition, with special regard to the new adhesive protocols aimed to preserve remaining sound dentin and enamel.
