This chapter argues that illustrated editions of Shakespeare, from Rowe's 1709 edition to contemporary graphic editions, should be taken seriously as a legiitimate mode of editing Shakespeare's works. the chapter includes analysis of the relationship between illustrations, the edition as a whole and the respective Shakespearian plays.
