On behalf of the many colleagues and friends of Professor Carlo Bertucci, it is our honor and pleasure to celebrate his retirement from the Department of Pharmacy and Biotechnology of the Alma Mater Studiorum – University of Bologna, Italy. The wide range of topics covered in this special issue honoring Carlo’s career represents his wide-ranging contributions to the natural, biological and analytical sciences. The papers in this volume also reflect the profound and heartfelt admiration and feelings that we have for Carlo. He is a great friend, colleague, collaborator and mentor, and a truly great person. Thus, it is with great happiness that we take this opportunity to reflect on what Carlo has accomplished during this stage of his wonderful career and, it is with even greater happiness, that we look forward to our continued collaborations with him in the next stage.
