Un’opera figlia del suo tempo: Xenio Toscani e la storia seriale

Xenio Toscani’s work is placed in a unique moment of the scientific literature concerning the socio-religious topics, in which the same historiography provides itself with the quantitative instruments to assess the analized phenomena, devoting a specific attention to the differences among the various geographical areas. Choosing the ‘longue durée’ and an extended regional space, studying both the recruitment of the secular clergy and the literacy, Xenio Toscani was able to renovate explanatory elements (economical and social structures, the pastoral stimulus etc.) that highlight the differences both in the interest for the priest and in the development or the delay in literacy and the entrance the written culture. Prof. Toscani’s work inserts itself also in a moment in which the Catholicism was experiencing a deep internal transformation with the constitutions and the decrees of the Second Vatican Council: if it is true that every history is “contemporary” history, then the post-tridentine reformation is fully current subject.

L’opera di Xenio Toscani si inscrive in un momento particolare della storiografia relativa a tematiche socio-religiose, quello in cui essa si dota di strumenti quantitativi per misurare i fenomeni che analizza e in cui dedica un’attenzione particolare alle differenze tra le varie aree geografiche. Scegliendo la lunga durata e un vasto spazio regionale, sia nello studio del reclutamento del clero secolare che in quello dell’alfabetizzazione, Xenio Toscani ha potuto rinnovare gli elementi esplicativi (strutture economiche e sociali, impulso pastorale ecc.) che danno conto del divario riscontrato tanto nell’interesse nei confronti della figura sacerdotale, quanto nell’avanzamento o nel ritardo dell’alfabetizzazione e dell’ingresso nella cultura scritta. La sua opera si inscrive anche in un momento in cui il cattolicesimo conosce una profonda trasformazione interna con le costituzioni e i decreti del Concilio Vaticano II: se è vero che ogni storia è “storia contemporanea”, la riforma post-tridentina è allora un soggetto pienamente attuale.
