This critical essay is an analysis of the artistic production of Chen Weinong (Haining, 1962), a famous contemporary Chinese artist. Working for years between China and France, his art is deeply rooted in the traditional Chinese aesthetics (especially Chinese ink painting and calligraphy), and at the same time it is strongly influenced by Western art. Chen Weinong has taken the essence of these two cultures and has succeeded in refreshing the ancient tradition as well as blazing new trails in Chinese art. This essay is included in the exhibition catalogue of an anthological exhibition devoted to Chen Weinong entitled “Chen Weinong Between China and France 2001 – 2012 Art Exhibition.” That exhibition was held at the Shanghai Art Museum from 6 to 22 June 2012.
