The volume span over 50 years of analysis and insights on nuclear weapons and policies. It contributes to the efforts of the international community to combat the presence and further spread, with a view of their complete elimination (a hard, long-term but not impossible objective). It is based on the contributions produced by scholars and practitioners who have attended five decades of ISODARCO (the International School On Disarmament And Research on COnflicts) courses and that resulted in the publication of 22 books, of which this volume is a selection of some of the best contributions (overall, three hundred essays the chapters). The book is divided into three parts and presents the contributions in chronological order to reconstruct the historical evolution of nuclear weapons and the attempts to their control, limitation and possible elimination, from the sixties/seventies (Part I, Early Attempts to Arms Control), to the critical years of the East/West confrontation of the seventies and eighties (Part II, The Hard Times), to the current post-bipolar international context (Part III, After the Cold War). That history largely overlaps with the list of courses, workshops, and seminars ISODARCO has organized since its establishment in 1966.
