His appointment at the Sorbonne came fairly late and was somewhat fraught. Aron’s election to the chair of the Sociology Department in 1955 was also controversial2. Although he was appointed in the end, at the time the belief that Aron was a fine editorialist – essentially a journalist – more than a university professor was fairly widespread. The publication of Peace and War put things to rights. The book was immediately considered a masterpiece, at least in France, and was very favourably reviewed even by intellectuals who had not appreciated Aron’s previous writings. The volume, in other words, led to Aron’s reconciliation with the academic community.
