The article deals with the role of the Hebrew Language in Gershom Scholem's early reflections. The mysticism of lnaguage and the highly paradoxical claim that the true Zionist should not only learn Hebrew but also that he is called upon learning to "be silent in Hebrew" is explained both from the vantage point of Scholem's Youth diaries as well as a result of his confrontation wit Walter Benjamin's metaphysics of Language, developed during the First World War. The relationship between a sacred Language and its outer border, its "silence", allows a fresh look into Scholem's seldo clearly formulated quasi-religious attitude towards the Jewish tradition between holiness and profanity.
