Based on British, American and Tanzanian archival sources, this essay analyses Zambia’s and Tanzania’s support for the decolonization of Zimbabwe, and sheds new light on the tensions and difficulties that marked the cooperation between the FLS during the 1970s. In so doing, this essay shows that, in spite of some limits and contradictions, support for the decolonization of Zimbabwe represented a central pillar of the state-building strategies pursued by the Tanzanian and Zambian governments after independence, and helped also to consolidate a regional bloc – the FLS – that would challenge apartheid South Africa and support Namibia’s national liberation struggle during the 1980s
