Although the philological claim of reconstructing a classical ‘model’ for most Renaissance tragedies seems to have waned, Senecan drama and its multifarious reception are still inescapable for the analysis and the understanding of modern tragic forms. This paper seeks to show how ‘reception’ can even concur to the ecdotics of a modern ‘text’: the intertextual rhetoric of Seneca’s description of the ghosts, in Troades, can help us read the text (and the ghost) of Shakespeare’s Hamlet and emend a notorious crux.

Abstract

Although the philological claim of reconstructing a classical ‘model’ for most Renaissance tragedies seems to have waned, Senecan drama and its multifarious reception are still inescapable for the analysis and the understanding of modern tragic forms. This paper seeks to show how ‘reception’ can even concur to the ecdotics of a modern ‘text’: the intertextual rhetoric of Seneca’s description of the ghosts, in Troades, can help us read the text (and the ghost) of Shakespeare’s Hamlet and emend a notorious crux.
