The word zamān is one of the most important of the Middle Persian cultural and religious lexicon; in spite of this significance the etymology of zamān remains tantalizing, in particular if we consider that the scholarly debate has produced different solutions, which result very controversial in particular with regard to its ultimate Semitic or Indo-Iranian origin. The present study offers a historical presentation of the debate, and tries to suggest a new interpretation of the data.

Abstract

The word zamān is one of the most important of the Middle Persian cultural and religious lexicon; in spite of this significance the etymology of zamān remains tantalizing, in particular if we consider that the scholarly debate has produced different solutions, which result very controversial in particular with regard to its ultimate Semitic or Indo-Iranian origin. The present study offers a historical presentation of the debate, and tries to suggest a new interpretation of the data.
