We present the analysis of the letters sent by Gaetano Savi and by his sons Paolo and Pietro (renowned scientists of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany) to Giovanni de’ Brignoli di Brünnhoff, director of the Botanic Gardens of Modena and professor of Botany and Agriculture at the local university. The 23 letters are part of the Autographotheca Horti R. Botanici Mutinensis and are dated from 1817 to 1849. They deal mainly with the exchanges of plants and scientific works, but sometimes there are some short mentions of civil and academic duties and family life. By means of these letters, one can try to understand, at least partially, the personality and character of the three Savis: a father, notable scientist; an elder son, very busy from a civil and academic standpoint and also a notable scientist; a second son, perhaps less able in the scientific field, but with an excellent practical sense and organizer of many academic initiatives.
