This paper was conceived as an homage to Daniel Fabre. It addresses the methodological and interpretative hurdles involved in field practices to study religious total institutions. On the basis of a participatory ethnography (acting as a postulant) in French monasteries of (discalced) Carmelite nuns, the author questions, in epistemological terms, the validity condition of scientific knowledge, the role played by the fieldworker, the research tools that can be utilized, and also her relationship with the subjects under study. This kind of ethnography made it possible to have firsthand experience of concrete, secluded life, getting closer to the ways the religious persona is constructed, their habits, and situations.

Il contributo, nato come omaggio a Daniel Fabre, ripercorre i nodi metodologici e interpretativi della pratica di campo in istituzioni totali di stampo religioso. Sulla base di una etnografia partecipativa (in qualità di postulante) all’interno di monasteri francesi di Carmelitane (scalze), ci si interroga, in termini epistemologici, sulle condizioni di validità del sapere scientifico e sulle modalità attuative di analisi in ambienti chiusi e autoreferenziali. Si pongono questioni sull’accesso, sul ruolo che lo studioso vi riveste, sugli strumenti indagativi che si trova a poter utilizzare, e anche sul rapporto con i soggetti studiati. Tale etnografia ha permesso di sperimentare in prima persona prassi di vita concreta claustrale, avvicinando abitudini, situazioni, percorsi di costruzione della persona religiosa.
