The Language of Fashion and its Possible Future The debate between the hegemony of the English language as a threat of identity, and the obstinate Anglophobia in defence of the national language is still very animated, even in the field of specialized languages or jargons concerned with a particular profession. In the contemporary international scenario, which is dominated by globalization processes, epoch-making migratory movements, new communication methods and technological innovations, the present essay suggests a reflection on multilingualism as a possible future in the perspective of enhancing linguistic diversity: not only the inexorable anglicization process of the fashion sector, but also the opening towards new languages and cultures as personal and social growth, as source of creativity and opportunity of development. The essay is divided into three parts: it starts with a reflection on the identity of language and the debate between the unrelenting ‘colonization’ of the English language as opposed to the strenuous defence of the local language; then it simply introduces the reader to some technical features of the language of fashion, and finally, it tries to outline a future outlook of such language.
