This paper discusses the ontological implications of the reflection on the living being, worked out by K. Goldstein and M. Merleau-Ponty. Goldstein proposes a holistic view of the organism and of its relationship with the world: the living being is always engaged in a process of coming to terms with its environment. Embracing the lesson of the scientist, Merleau-Ponty adopts a notion of life characterized by a dynamic dimension. The traditional epistemological lexicon is shaped by a deterministic view, against which Merleau-Ponty affirms the priority of the indeterminate and of the contingency: nature is characterized by an incessant birth. The improvisation, that can’t be explained in a deterministic standpoint, plays significant part in the behavior of the living being, that is always enigmatic and openended. The title of the paper refers to the possibility of overturn the relation between the theme and its variations, thinking the theme as a process of individuation that emerges from a background of continuous variations.
