The research carried on by the Ostia Marina Project in the Caupona of the god Pan at ancient Ostia has revealed new mosaic pavements. These surfaces, that were in close relation with the interior design of the furniture, show the crucial role played by the floors in the architectural interior design of the Roman and late Roman world. The research focuses particularly on the mosaic design in the service areas of the building. This discovery provides a starting point for an indepth view of this phenomenon.

Abstract
