The paper explores the causes of the opposition of Callisthenes to Alexander’s proskynesis in 327 BC. One can agree, with most scholars, that it was only a court ritual, so that it would be wrong to connect it explicitly to the ruler cult. Nevertheless some ancient sources (esp. Isocrates, Phaenias in Plutarch) offer a different picture, hardly acceptable for Macedonian and Greek religious tradition, and which could have left room for misunderstandings.

Abstract
The paper explores the causes of the opposition of Callisthenes to Alexander’s proskynesis in 327 BC. One can agree, with most scholars, that it was only a court ritual, so that it would be wrong to connect it explicitly to the ruler cult. Nevertheless some ancient sources (esp. Isocrates, Phaenias in Plutarch) offer a different picture, hardly acceptable for Macedonian and Greek religious tradition, and which could have left room for misunderstandings.File in questo prodotto:
