Abstract

The relationship between Matilda of Canossa and the city of Lucca was quite difficult and tormented. Her father Boniface (+1052) had already met considerable resistance. The support provided by Matilda to the gregorian papacy increased the hostility of the urban classes, several noble families and a good part of the members of the Cathedral Chapter, who were closely related to the local aristocracy. Only slowly the political and ecclesiastical tensions were overcome thanks to the smart policy of Bishop Rangerio. Only from the XIV century the figure of Matilda assumed a significant role in the city's memory.
