Cogliere l’occasione: l’Organizzazione dello stato islamico nella lotta per il Medio Oriente

The power of the so called Islamic state relied on a quite sophisticated organization and strategy that allowed it to consolidate along time and expand across large territories in Iraq and Syria. Such an ability, however, is not sufficient to understand the success of the organization. It is necessary, in fact, to take into account the context in which it operates, and the opportunities that these spaces at these these times offered it in order to build its own state-project. Among other, there are two factors that have featured the Iraqi and Syrian contexts in recent times: on the one hand, the crisis of state institutions, which opened new spaces for alternative forms of government and state-building; on the other hand, the transformation of the Iraqi and Syrian territories into a battlefield for the struggle for power and hegemony in the Middle East by regional and international forces. Quite different from other islamist and jihadi forces, the Organization of the islamic state could grasp the chances set by these two factors, which are still the main points of strength for the survival of the Organization.

L’Organizzazione dello stato islamico ha fatto affidamento su di una notevole capacità organizzativa e strategica, che le ha permesso di consolidarsi nel tempo ed espandersi nello spazio. L’abilità dimostrata finora, però, non è sufficiente a spiegare il successo dell’organizzazione. E’ necessario, infatti, fare riferimento al contesto nel quale opera e alle opportunità che questi spazi e questi tempi hanno offerto all’organizzazione per realizzare il proprio progetto di governo. Due sono gli elementi che hanno caratterizzato il contesto iracheno e siriano in epoca recente: da un lato, la crisi delle istituzioni statali, che ha lasciato spazio alla costruzione di prassi e istituzioni di governo alternative; dall’altro lato, la trasformazione degli spazi iracheno e siriano in campi di battaglia della lotta per la leadership politica del Medio Oriente. A differenza di altre forze islamiste e jihadiste, l’Organizzazione dello stato islamico ha saputo approfittare delle opportunità offerte da questi due fattori che continuano a rappresentare i principali elementi di forza su cui i dirigenti dell’Organizzazione fondano le proprie speranze di sopravvivenza.
