Symposium description: The increasing use of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) sheets for repair and strengthening existing reinforced concrete structures, and masonry structures as well, has generated considerable research interest. Recently FRP sheets have been also applied to steel structures. The increase in load capacity due to FRP sheets application has attracted several designers. The effectiveness of such a technology is conditioned by several aspects such as understanding the mechanisms of failure of strengthened structures and the durability of the application itself. The use of FRP is still an ongoing technology where several aspect need to be clarified by means of research. The symposium can be a forum for exchanging knowledge of the latest development in FRP application to repair and strengthen civil structures. The topic spread from the analysis of mechanism of failure, flexural and shear strengthening of frames, increasing of fatigue life of existing structures, repair of damaged masonry structures to durability of application, monitoring, and other related subjects.
