The research agenda of the project was designed as an integral part of the ‘Cahokia Epicenter Project’ coordinated by John Kelly. In April 2011, the research team of researchers and students from the University of Bologna carried out the first fieldwork season in the West Plaza, in an effort to examine in greater detail the occupational dynamics of one of the four plazas that constituted the center of the Mississippian city of Cahokia (Kelly 1996a; Kelly and Brown 2012).
