This paper compares the description of Eridanus made by Aratus with the Latin version of Cicero, Germanicus, Avienus, and the late Aratus Latinus. With the sole exception of Aratus Latinus - a literal, not a literary translation - what we see is a constant rise in the references to Phaethon's myth, who was just an implied presence in Aratus' text. The result is a rich intertextual dialogue, involving not only the genealogy of Aratean imitations, but the wider poetic tradition.

Abstract

This paper compares the description of Eridanus made by Aratus with the Latin version of Cicero, Germanicus, Avienus, and the late Aratus Latinus. With the sole exception of Aratus Latinus - a literal, not a literary translation - what we see is a constant rise in the references to Phaethon's myth, who was just an implied presence in Aratus' text. The result is a rich intertextual dialogue, involving not only the genealogy of Aratean imitations, but the wider poetic tradition.
