La belva umana. Il lupo nella poesia e nella letteratura finlandese

Wolves and the werewolf theme are present in Finnish folklore and literature from the ancient oral poetic tradition and mythology to contemporary literature. The wolf is a totemic and highly symbolic animal, whose cultural meaning is widely understood. In Finnish folk poetry, animals like wolves have a close connection to humans, and the division between the human world and the animal world is often blurred. The wolf is mentioned at various points in the Kalevala, the Finnish epic poem, as in mythical folktales. In modern and contemporary Finnish literature the werewolf theme evolves into a more psychological way of depicting metamorphosis, expressing the internal conflict, duality and the aggressive otherness of the feminine figures.

Il lupo è tra le figure totemiche più popolari in Europa in generale e nel folclore baltofinnico e scaninavo in particolare. Nel Kalevala, il poema nazionale finnico, come nei racconti popolari, al lupo sono attribuite varie caratteristiche sia terrene sia magiche. Nella letteratura moderna e contemporanea il mito del lupo in connessione con la femminilità rappresenta la psiche femminile e il suo lato "altro".
