The aim of the present study is to analyse the properties of the organic matrix from the otoliths of some bony fish species with the aim of investigating intra- and inter-specific differences in otolith biomineralization processes. In the urea soluble fractions a unique large band around 50-55 kDa was observed in all samples. Acid protein fractions were observed in two out of three species, indicating that the organic matrix has different roles depending on species and the time of its formation.

Abstract

The aim of the present study is to analyse the properties of the organic matrix from the otoliths of some bony fish species with the aim of investigating intra- and inter-specific differences in otolith biomineralization processes. In the urea soluble fractions a unique large band around 50-55 kDa was observed in all samples. Acid protein fractions were observed in two out of three species, indicating that the organic matrix has different roles depending on species and the time of its formation.
