This paper demonstrates that stereo vision cameras can provide museums with novel services for visitors and management. The proposed system is based on stereo vision cameras that provide a context management system with information related to visitors’ position and movement. Stereo vision cameras need to be installed in one or a small number of places in a museum – depending on the museum layout and on the desired services. The camera-based system may complement multimedia guides equipped with inertial sensors to provide accurate tracking and localization over the entire site, both inside and outside the cameras field of view. Localization and tracking may be used to support context-aware content delivery and services, as well as visitors counting and visitors’ behavior analysis. Experimental results are presented.
