In ordertoimplementanEEG-basedbraincomputerinterface(BCI),averylargenumberofstrategies (ranging fromsensory–motor,p300,auditorybased,visuallybased)canbeused.However,notechnique existswhichisbasedontheolfactorystimulationor,better,basedontheimaginationofolfactory stimuli. The presentpaperdescribesaninnovativeparadigm,thatisthevoluntarybrainactivationwiththe disgust producedbyrememberingunpleasantodors,andasimpleandrobustclassification methodon which asingletrialbinaryBCIcanbeimplemented.Inordertoclassifythesignal,mainlythechannels P4, C4,T8andP8havebeenused,byspanningthefrequencybandbetween32and42Hz,thatisa subset ofthegammabandexternaltothebandsusuallyoccupiedbyothertasks(theintervalbetween 1 and30Hz),andthealphabandbetween8and12Hz. Right hemisphereofthebrainandgammabandoffrequenciesareparticularlysensitivewhen experiencingnegativeemotions,suchasthedisgustproducedbysmellingorrememberingunpleasant odors, whilethealphabandisusuallymodified withconcentration.Thisconstitutesanadvantageforthe proposed classification techniquebecauseitismadeintrinsicallyeasybythelocalizationintoparticular positions andfrequencies:differentfeaturesaremostlybasedondifferentfrequencybands. The choiceofdisgustproducedbyrememberingunpleasantodorsistwofold:smellingisanancestral sensation whichissostrongthatitsEEGsignalisproducedalsoinpersonsaffectedbyhyposmiawhen they imagineanolfactorysituation;itcanbeusedwithoutexternalstimulation,thatistheusercan decide freelywhenandifactivateit. The proposedmethodandtheexperimentalsetuparedescribedandaseriesofexperimental measurements arepresentedanddiscussed.Theaccuracyoftheproposedmethodisalsoevaluatedand the reachedlevelsareabout90%.Theproposedsystemcanbeausefulcommunicationalternativefor disabled peoplethatcannotuseotherBCIparadigms.
