Deduction, Computation, Experiment. Exploring the Effectiveness of Proof (Bologna, Italy)

Workshop located in a cross-disciplinary field bringing together mathematics, logic, natural science and philosophy. While Gödel, Church and Turing, in different ways, achieved a deep understanding of the notion of effective calculability involved in the nature of proving, Eugene Wigner refered to the unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics in the natural sciences. Where should the boundary be traced between mathematical procedures and natural processes? What is the characteristic use of a proof as a computation, as opposed to its use as an experiment? What does natural science tell us about the effectiveness of proof? The aim of the workshop is to search for some answers, to discuss conceptual and logical issues underlying such questions and, perhaps, to discover other relevant questions. http://www.triennalefilosofia.unibo.it/dce/home.htm
