Low Temperature Carburizing (LTC) is a process recently developed to improve wear resistance of austenitic steels. This thermo-chemical treatment, done at a temperature below 500°C for several days, increases the surface roughness and leaves high strong residual stresses on a very thin (20/30 microns) superficial layer. The effect of this treatment on the fatigue limit of an AISI 316L steel was investigated by means of Rotating Bar Bending Tests and SEM analyses. Fatigue tests showed an increase of the fatigue limit up to 70% and evidenced the crack nucleation under the treated layer. A considerable temperature rise was observed during the tests held at 50 Hz.
