On February 1, 2006, some 150 high level representatives from prominent satellite industry companies and organizations have met in Brussels, under the auspices of the European Commission and of the European Space Agency, to officially inaugurate the “Integral Satcom Initiative (ISI)”, a new European Technology Platform, as part the 7th Framework Programme (FP7), which will drive European RTD initiatives in the period 2007-2013. The ISI Chairman, Prof. Giovanni Corazza from the University of Bologna, claimed: “ISI will foster the entire satcom sector and contribute to several EU policies in order to promote industrial competitiveness, growth and employment in a sustainable way, in synergy with National priorities. The response from the stakeholders to ISI has been very strong and allowed us to form the platform in a rapid and efficient manner”. The European Commissioner for Information Society and Media, M.me Viviane Reding, sent a strong message to the meeting and stated: “I welcome this initiative, and in particular the industries commitment to pool their research and innovation investments in a field that is very important and strategic for Europe”.
