In this study we evaluated the role of a recombinant plasmid protein of Chlamydophila psittaci, pgp3, as a marker of chlamydial infection in animals infected with Chlamydophila felis. The only plasmid ORF found so far to encode for the antigenic protein ORF3 in Chlamydia trachomatis, codes similarly in C. psittaci for a protein that is very antigenic; therefore, this protein can be a useful marker of infection in cats infected with C. felis strains containing extrachromosomial DNA elements.

Abstract

In this study we evaluated the role of a recombinant plasmid protein of Chlamydophila psittaci, pgp3, as a marker of chlamydial infection in animals infected with Chlamydophila felis. The only plasmid ORF found so far to encode for the antigenic protein ORF3 in Chlamydia trachomatis, codes similarly in C. psittaci for a protein that is very antigenic; therefore, this protein can be a useful marker of infection in cats infected with C. felis strains containing extrachromosomial DNA elements.
